Reunion Update

SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles Launches their Fundraising Campaign in Preparation for the 2018 SMU Alumni Abroad Grand Reunion

The November 20, 2016 Fundraising held at Granada Pavilion was a success.  In spite of the rain people came and celebrated with us.  Lunch was served and we all enjoyed the food.  Everybody dance with their hearts content with the wonderful music provided by Wilfred Llanes, Auditor of the Association. People wants to stay and dance more but we have to say goodbye.  It was a wonderful experience with people who contributed their time and money to help this event.

The event was opened with a thanksgiving prayer led by Edna Viloria and a welcome speech by Zen Fabroa Melo, President of SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles.

Welcome Speech of Zen:

“It is a great pleasure for me here today to welcome all of you.

I would like to seize this opportunity to introduce myself, I am Zen Fabroa Melo, President of the SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles.  It is with pleasure to usher in the launching of our fundraising campaign.  Your contribution, time and most of all your presence are so much appreciated. Your contribution today will be earmarked to support our organization’s goal of organizing the 2018 SMU Grand Reunion that in turn will support our charities, one of which helping one or more poor but deserving students to pursue higher education at St. Mary’s University, so these poor kids will have better futures to be able to serve and contribute to the prosperity of their communities.

Yes, many of us have made real choices.  The same choice is denied to these poor kids and millions of them around the world.  Now we are all here to show how vital our decision was.  Your choice was not to walk away when help was asked for.  It was a choice not to simply get on with our lives.  It was a choice to listen and to understand.

That help is to raise money to fight illiteracy, to educate our young so they will not live in ignorance, fear and secrecy of not being educated.  Through these funds we all have all worked hard for to raise, direct help will be given to these kids. Through your efforts and those of many others like you who did not turn their backs away, hope is possible for them.

When people come together like this, it raises a wonderful energy of commitment and dedication.  It brings out all that is best about being human.

In closing, I wish to thank all of you.  Let’s go on building the bonds of friendship and goodness through cooperation and mutual respect.

Thank you all for being with us, joining us and supporting our beginnings.
