Reunion Update (August 14, 2017)

Announcements and reminder on the venues, amenities and other good stuff you will be enjoying on June 29, 2018 to July 1, 2018 – our big day “The first SMU/Vizcayanos Grand Reunion”:

Our registration is now ongoing. Your registration fees ($195.00)  will  include souvenir program, t-shirts, raffle tickets, giveaways and tote bag.

Book your reservation with Hilton as soon as possible so we can add more rooms (as needed) to the group rate before the deadline on June 2018.

Welcome Night – Friday (June 29, 2018) – 

Location:  SIGNATURE BANQUET HALL at Balboa Mission Square, 11130 Balboa Blvd. A, Granada Hills, CA 91341, Tel: 818-363

This will be a seated dinner (you all deserve to be treated special). You will enjoy a fusion of Italian and Mediterrenean food with 11 appetizers and 10 hot items with load of salads, bread, unlimited drinks (water, soda, coffee, tea – sorry NO ALCOHOL) and selection of fruit. Dinner will be serve till 10:00 p.m. No one will ever go hungry ever…..

While registration is going on, you will be listening to the beautiful piano playing of one of our volunteers on the baby grand piano at the lobby. The ballroom is amazing and elegant. There will be security officers by the entrance of the ballroom to ensure smooth flow of traffic and hostesses and ushers will be inside the ballroom to direct you to your tables, for your safety and the safety of the officers to do their jobs efficiently.

It is a very safe neighborhood with ample and brightly lit parking space. Complimentary rides from hotel to venue will be provided to safely transport attendees staying at the Hilton. Transport will start exactly 4:00 pm.

From LAX to 11130 Balboa Blvd, Granada Hills, CA (32.00 minutes from LAX)- depending  on traffic.  Please start leaving your departing location before 2:30p.m. to avoid the Friday afternoon Rush.  It’s a good thing school is closed for the summer.

From LAX take 105E-Anderson Freeway towards Norwalk. Merge to 405 N towards Santa Monica Freeway. Merge on Freeway 118 (Ronald Reagan Freeway) exit 71A towards Simi Valley. Take the Balboa Exit.  Turn left onto Balboa Blvd.  It is located in Trader Joe’s Plaza.

THE Hilton is a 5 star-hotel located in the heart of Warner Center, Woodland Hills, very affluent neighborhood.  Newly renovated in 2016 with 2 king beds for a very low rate of $139.00/night pus tax  (you cannot find any hotel in Los Angeles with this rate especially July 4th holiday).  Rooms were renovated and everything you find in your room are all state of the art amenities. The hotel is surrounded with high class restaurant, gym, theaters, the village and the Westfield mall. A complimentary ride provided by officers will be provided to the attendees to go to the restaurant or the mall between 7:00am to 12:00 noon. Prior arrangements must be made with the Chairperson, Brenda Fabroa Martin and the Business Mgr Arnel Martin.

This will also be a seated dinner.  Dinner will be served on time.  Bread and salad will be provided on each table.  There will be a choice of 5 entrees (beef, chicken, salmon, white fish, and vegetarian). Coffee and tea will be served. Desserts will be served as well.  We will announce via our website the menu of the hotel (provided by the catering manager) to indicate your choices – 14 days prior to the event.  Please don’t forget to indicate (as required in our registration form) if you have any kind of food allergies. The Liaison officers (Eletta T Quiboloy, Cely & George Gutierrez and Alma Velasco Wright) will also assist with any concerns you will have.

The Ballroom is huge and can accommodate 300 people with a large dance floor. The ballroom tables will be decorated with the most elegant centerpieces and lighted trees will adorn the wall of the ballroom.  The decoration will be arranged by our talented Chairperson, Brenda Fabroa Martin.  Our DJ and Treasurer, Wilfred Llanes will provide the music and awesome lights (laser, etc). Officers will provide security and will assist the traffic going inside the ballroom and officers and ushers will be in the ballroom directing attendees their tables so you will all be safely seated.


From LAX take the 405 N to 101 West .  Exit Canoga Avenue.  Right turn on Canoga Avenue- 4 long blocks to Hotel – located on the east side of the street- next to BlueShield bldg.- corner street – Victory.

Lake Balboa is 15 minutes from The Hilton.  It is an 80 acre recreation facility with maritime water, ducks and the famous cherry blossom trees (no bloom during summer) – hiking, biking, boat rides (lifeguard in on duty) and so many things (if you have kids to play).  Food will be catered.  We will have Filipino catered food for a change.

Attendees staying in the hotel will be transported to the picnic site.  You will have the chance to intermingle with our special guest, Hon. Gov. Carlos Padilla.

Time:  12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Your tickets for the picnic must be given to the driver as you board .

Attendees  will be transported back to the Hotel.

After the excitement of the past 3 days, we all need to unwind and take a break from the busy life of Los Angeles. Escape to Catalina Island in Avalon is the perfect place. It is the best place to rest and relax. You wil enjoy its year round Mediterrenean climate, it’s the ideal place to enjoy the ocean and sunshine. With it’s blue waters and Greek isle scenery, plush hotels, trendy restaurants and so many activities, you will have a one day of paradise experience.  You can see the sights from a golf cart, from a boat or on foot. Avalon is clean and safe.  It is only about an hour from the Los Angeles coastline.

Reunion Update (posted May 1st, 2017)

To our fellow Alumni and Novo Vizcayanos:

It is with great pride that we now open our doors to celebrate our life, success and camaraderie since we finished our schooling in the Province of Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. We have been so divided and separately celebrated our reunions and meeting our kababayans.

This time through the initiative of St. Mary's High School Class of 1966 and SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles, we would like to officially invite you to join us for the beginning of many other reunions among all of us for the coming years.

The first reunion will be held in Los Angeles, California on June 29 to July 1, 2018. We are celebrating for three days. The first night, June 29, 2018 - Welcome Night, will be a getting to know each other again. The second night, June 30, 2018 is the Gala Night that will include our beloved Governor Carlos Padilla as our guest speaker. The third day, July 1, 2018 will be a picnic that will give us time to relax and have a chance to get to know our Honorable Governor by allowing us to have an open question and answer session.

Please join us and meet other Vizcayanos.


This reunion will be for all Vizcayanos. This is an independent gathering different from the SMU reunion headed by Marlene Cordero, Emma Geronsin and Lee Tengco of SMU Nueva Vizcaya Alumni of San Francisco, a registered non-profit charitable foundation since 2015. The June 8-10, 2018 SMU reunion hosted by their LA CHAPTER, SMU Alumni Association of Southern California headed by Gloria Cajanap is a CHARITY EVENT.

This announcement is to clarify and not to be confused with the charitable foundation. Our planning committee is doing this event as pure reunion and that your registration fees would be solely earmarked for your entertainment.

The SMU Alumni Class ’66, host of the 2018 Grand Reunion is proud to announce a new payment method of the registration fee.  This payment plan will be for the purpose of convenience and easy planning for all the Alumni and Vizcayanos.

Please take advantage of the Easy Payment Plan of the registration fee ($195.00) that is now available on our offline and online registration form. 

Early registrant registering today until early November 2017 can avail of the 4 easy installment of $48.75.  Visit our website and register and choose the Easy Payment Plan. Mail your 4 checks payable to SMU Alumni Class 66 c/o WilfredLlanes, Treasurer at 6518 Whitsett Avenue, North Hollywood, CA 91606, with the following :

  • 1st check – payable on date of registration
  • 2nd and 3rd check – any preferred date for the succeeding months or every 30th of each month.
  • 4th check – payable on November 30, 2017.

We encourage all Vizcayanos to register early and avail themselves of this promotion.  With the registration fee out of the way, you will have the time to concentrate on your hotel bookings and airfare.

You can also opt to pay your Registration fee for a One-Time Payment by credit card (we accept all credit cards except Discover) or PayPal and when you receive your credit card statement you can pay any amount you want. 





Our fellow Alumni, Vizcayanos, friends and families:

We are now officially launching our preparation for our reunion on June 29, 30 & July 1, 2018. Registration is now open for everyone. Our Offline and Online Registration/Souvenir Program forms are now officially accessible via our website; It's never too early to open officially our reunion's registration because we want you to have ample time to schedule your family vacation and save gradually for this purpose e.g. cut down your starbucks coffee, your casino trip, putting loose change in your piggy bank. The reunion dates have been carefully planned to coincide with the school breaks/vacation for your kids or grandkids and also the holidays.

The Alumni Class'66 started this tradition and now paves the way for this reunion to be opened to all Vizcayanos (SMU and non-SMU) to come and experience the most eventful gathering of friendship and unity that was taken for granted for a very long time. We will forge a friendship that every generation or our children and grandchildren to partake and be a part of for years to come.  This will be the beginning of a wonderful experience.

In addition, we are now almost 70% sold out in our Souvenir Program ad subscription. Alumni from different places and scattered throughout North America as far as Australia and previous subscribers have come on board, and placed their family ads to grace the beautiful pages of our souvenir program, being done by no other than the Webmaster/Desktop Layout Artist of SMU Alumni Association of Toronto and now has taken the task of doing the same for our SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles-SMU Alumni Class'66 (from website creation, our association logo and all other graphics of the association. We urge everyone to share their beautiful families, business and personal messages in our souvenir program.

Class '66 • SMU LA reunion committees & Volunteers



The Board of Directors of the SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles Chapter is proud to announce the content and intent of our Chapter, approved on September 26, 2016  Full text of our bylaws is published in our website and freely viewed by the public.

This Chapter is totally independent from SMU Nueva Vizcaya San Francisco organization.  We are a chapter only under their registered non profit 501(3)c. We have our own EIN assigned by the IRS. 

We as a Chapter is managed by the Board of Directors of this Chapter, as follows: President, Secretary, Treasurer/Auditor and Liaison Officer.  The Board of Directors manages the funds, assets and properties of the Chapter within the bounds of the law and IRS regulations.

This Chapter is the only legitimate, independent entity to operate and use the SMU Alumni Association of Los Angeles brand in all counties of Los Angeles and other counties of Southern and Northern California.  So rest assured that the interest of all SMU alumni and friends will be safe and protected by this organization.

The day to day activities and operation of this Chapter will be shared to all Alumni via our website and social network, ie facebook.  Financial undertakings, contributions or sponsors will be transparent and reported to all alumni, donors and/or sponsors.  A financial report will be published by the Auditor/Acting Treasurer when we are fully operational.

The registration fees of the Alumni and guests will not be tax deductible as this compensate the full 3 days event.  We will provide you the entertainment we all deserve and get our monies's worth.  We will bring back the spirit of friendship and fun that was envisioned since we first started this tradition.  I attended the first SMU Alumni grand reunion held in Chicago. It was a lot of fun, food and reuniting old friendship.  This is what a reunion is all about, the celebration of friendship.  So we must have a great and safe location for our guests and families coming from different places.  Good food to savor and entertainment we will all enjoy for two nights and a day.  We as your host will deliver to all of you what we really want in a reunion.

If we have donors and sponsors who will help us defray for the expenses of our souvenir program and other endeavors for the success of the reunion, all monies will be use for this purpose alone and the leftover will be distributed to either Charities outline by the organization (will be announced in a later date) or Marlene Cordero's Foundation. This will be the SMU Alumni's choice.  Part of the monies will also serve as seed money for the next host to use as a start up fund.  It is so difficult and stressful not to have any kind of fund to start with.  Receipts for tax purposes will be distributed on the registration night event.  For 2016 donations, tax deductible letters has been mailed.

Sponsors letter for the souvenir program will be mailed this week.  Registration online and offline will be launch very soon or sooner than the last week of March 2017.  Follow us in our website.  I will announce it on my facebook as well.

We would like to clarify the dress code that was initially announced last week.  There were some concerns that dress code or the preference of "long evening gown" on the gala night will not be economically feasible for some attendee.

Ladies you have the option to wear long evening gown or cocktail evening dress (short version of long evening gown).  Since the dress code on the registration night is cocktail, we will do a “best in gown” competition to those who will participate in wearing a long evening gown on the gala night.  If this will help, our SMU planning committee's fashionista is offering some fashion tips that will not break your bank account.

1. Now is the time to go through your closet and check what you have, maybe you forgot you have a classy long black skirt or any solid color-such as satin, lace or shantung silk.  Let’s have some fun and add a classy formal top or plain top and add a rhinestone belt. If all you have is short cocktail dress then buy a meter of lace fabric at your local fabric store and make an overlay skirt. If you already have a nice evening gown that you used in a wedding or formal social events and you think it’s too boring, don’t be afraid to do any alterations or wear a bolero. Add jewelry, clutch and you don’t even need to wear high heels, low heel sandals or pumps will do.  If your preference is pants, wear a wide legged pants made of lace, satin, chiffon.
